Year 1: Blog items

Arrays, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 16th Apr 2022 @ 1:48pm

7.4.22

In our maths lesson today we looked at identifying what an array is. We were able to sort everyday items into arrays and not arrays. We then went on array hunt around the classroom to see if we could see any examples in our environment. We finished off our challenges by creating our own arrays using the peg boards. We had to a remember than an array has to have columns and rows that are equal groups.

Easter Garden, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 16th Apr 2022 @ 1:34pm

6.4.22
Together we created an Easter garden in class today. We used the palm crosses that Fr Graeme gave to us yesterday to represent the cross that Jesus died on. We created the tomb where Jesus' body was laid with the stone rolled away in readiness for Easter Sunday. We used natural objects to create the rest of the garden such as a path made out of pebbles and pinecones to represent trees. We then sprinkled some grass, cress and wild flower seeds so that by Easter Sunday there would be lots of signs of new life in the garden.

Maths, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 16th Apr 2022 @ 12:47pm

5.4.22
Our maths lesson today focused on making equal groups as part of our unit on multiplication. We started by playing a game where the children had to roll 2 dice. They then looked to see if they created two equal groups with the numbers that each dice landed on or not. We then came back onto the carpet to look at how many groups we were creating each time and how many were in each group. Then we knew what we could count in to find out the total for all the groups.

Outdoor Worship, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 4th Apr 2022 @ 9:52am

29.3.22
We took part in our outdoor class worship. We gathered together with our friends to share a drink and a biscuit in God's beautiful creation. We listened to one of the stories we have been learning about Jesus, the feeding of the 5000, and recapped on how this shows us Jesus is special. We recalled that he is able to perform miracles because he is God's chosen son. We looked around us and reminded ourselves of the signs of new life and spring we spotted on our spring walk. We talked about getting closer to Easter and that these signs of new life in our world remind us that Jesus died to show us that our sins can be forgiven so we can have a new beginning and to give us hope of a new life in Heaven after death. We finished with the Lord's prayer.

PSHE, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 4th Apr 2022 @ 9:49am

24.3.22
In our PSHE lesson we walked around our school environment and identified the different things that we liked in different areas. We then spoke about how we can all look after these things to keep our school environment looking great. We identified that it is our right to have a nice school environment to learn in but that it is our responsibility to keep it looking neat and tidy .

Giving directions, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 4th Apr 2022 @ 9:38am

23.3.22
The children enjoyed playing a game with their friends where they had to give each other directions to move round a grid map of London to visit the different landmarks. They used lots of good positional language and had a go at riting a set of step by step instructions too.

Spring Walk, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 22nd Mar 2022 @ 5:31am

17.3.22

To start our new RE unit about Easter, celebrating new life and new beginnings, we went on a spring walk around school. We found lots of signs of spring and new life starting to grow. We saw daffodils, daisies and other purple flowers starting to grow. We found ants, ladybirds and some other little insects. We saw leaves sprouting on the trees, blossom buds forming on the branches and bushes starting to get full of leaves again. We also saw the grass is starting to get long again and the beautiful blue sky peeking through the fluffy white clouds.

Maths, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 22nd Mar 2022 @ 5:20am

15.3.22

In maths this week we were looking at doubles. We understand that doubles are the same number added to itself. We created a Numicon staircase to show all our doubles up to 20. We had to arrange our Numicon shapes to make them fit together neatly so we could make our Numicon staircase correctly.

Prayers for Peace, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 13th Mar 2022 @ 12:23pm

10.3.22
The children have written some lovely prayers for peace after we had a discussion about the crisis taking place in Ukraine at the moment. In RE, we have been learning about some of the miracles that Jesus performed. We had a discussion about how Christians believe that the power of prayer can still help modern day miracles to happen as long as we put our faith and trust in God.

Skillwise, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 9:21pm

3.3.22
The children enjoyed playing a number of throwing games with Ben, our Skillwise coach, at lunchtime. They had to try to throw a beanbag and hit a target to score points. The activities were heling the children to develop accuracy in their throwing skills.

World Book Day, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 10th Mar 2022 @ 9:04pm

3.3.22

The children were able to take part in a live Zoom! session with the author Catherine Rayner to celebrate World Book Day. It was great to hear her read a number of her stories and to have a go at drawing some of the main characters alongside her. It was inspiring to hear Catherine talk so passionately about her ideas and characters and the process of writing a story. The children thoroughly enjoyed this session today.

Computing, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 9th Mar 2022 @ 10:05pm

2.3.22
The children enjoyed taking part in their final challenge for the Maze Explorers topic we have been doing. They worked in pairs to set their partner challenges on street map task. One partner had to choose two different places for their partner to visit in order. Their partner then had to give the car a clear set of instructions so they navigated their way around the streets successfully and ended up in the correct destinations.

RE, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 20th Feb 2022 @ 12:03pm

18.2.22

The children have been enjoying learning about some of the miracles Jesus performed during his life. This week we have found about the feeding of the five thousand story. We retold the main parts of the story from the viewpoint of the little boy who gave his food to Jesus to share with the crowd of people. The children created some fantastic letters to their family to tell them what had happened.

History, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 20th Feb 2022 @ 11:56am

16.2.22 & 17.2.22

As part of our History work for our topic of Bright Lights, Big City, we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. The children have enjoyed learning about the main events and some pf the key people involved. We completed a piece of extended writing to recall the main events in the order that they happened. The children wrote in role as Samuel Pepys and created some super diary entries.

Computing, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 19th Feb 2022 @ 12:39pm

16.2.22
In computing this week, we have enjoyed creating a set of instructions to help our avatar get to where they needed to go using the program 2Go on Purple Mash. We had to make sure our instructions were accurate to make sure our avatar didn't run into any dangers or get lost along the way. We found it useful to keep trying out our set of instrctions so we could check that each stage was accurate. Doing this made it much easier to spot any mistakes in our instructions and change them to make them correct without needing help.

Maths, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 19th Feb 2022 @ 12:25pm

16.2.22
The children have been subtracting from 20, in maths this week, using number lines and number tracks. We have looked at the difference between a number line and a number track and how we can use them correctly to ensure the answers we get to the calculations are accurate.

PE - underarm throw, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 15th Feb 2022 @ 10:20pm

Today in PE, we developed some of the games we played last week to encourage the children to employ tactics to try to score points against their opponents. The children were practising the accuracy of their under arm throw by trying to land their bean bags inside their target hoops. However, their opponent was trying to block or catch the bean bag to prevent the person throwing from scoring any points. The children throwing tried to mislead the defender so that they could try to score more points. There was a lot of accuracy in our throws this week.

Computing, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 13th Feb 2022 @ 9:51pm

9.2.22

In computing, the children enjoyed giving the creatures directions to reach all of the targets on the 2Go grids. They had to work out how many steps in each direction they would need to take before giving the instructions and think about how they could undo any mistakes they made. To develop their learning fiurther, they then had to create a simple alogorithm to incrporate all of the steps required so that only one instruction needed to be given to reach all of the targets along the way.

Maths, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 13th Feb 2022 @ 9:20pm

7.2.22
The children have been measuring the length of objects in our classroom using non-standard units of measure.
They were able to see how many cubes long each of the objects were and then used these measurements to find out which was the longest and the shortest.

PE, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 5th Feb 2022 @ 12:21pm

2.2.22
In PE today, we continued to practise our underarm throwing skills through a range of throwing games and challenges. The children are starting to show more accuracy and control with their throws.

PSHE, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 5th Feb 2022 @ 12:16pm

2.2.22
In our PSHE lesson today we were thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe. We talked about how we can make ourselves well again when we are ill. We discussed how medicine can help to get rid of our symptoms of feeling ill. The we looked at how to use medicine safely and talked about the dangers of taking medicine that isn’t ours or taking too much medicine by mistake. We then played a game in groups to see who could make Tania feel better first by taking sensible steps to help cure her symptoms.

Geography, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 31st Jan 2022 @ 6:41am

28.1.22
The children worked together in groups this afternoon to create maps of the local area showing some of the human features we have seen around our school. They had to draw them carefully and think about the location of each of the features in relation to the other features. The children showed great teamwork and communication skills during this task. Well done.

RWI, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 31st Jan 2022 @ 6:10am

25.1.22
The children in my RWI group were so impressive in their session today. They are building speed when recalling their sounds and can go through their practice cards faster than my fingers can work! They can correctly identify the sounds they know, in both real and alien words, so they can read words accurately and speedily and spell these real words correctly too.

Comparing lengths in Maths, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 31st Jan 2022 @ 6:05am

24.1.22
The children were comparing the lengths of different objects in maths today. They had to find out which object was the longest and which was the shortest by comparing the two objects. They discovered that in order to make true comparisons all the objects had to be lined up correctly so they were all inline and starting from the same point. Once the children discovered this they were able to order a number of objects correctly so they were starting at the shortest and getting longer each time or starting at the longest and getting shorter each time.

Computing, by Mrs Chidgey

Date: 28th Jan 2022 @ 9:59pm

17.1.21
The children enjoyed taking part in our computing lesson today. They had to follow the instructions given to complete the drawing tasks using the correct colours for each part of the pictures. This was a good way to introduce the children to algorithms helping them to understand that they are a set of step by step instructions for the computer to follow.
