RE Sukkot 21.10.22
Lesson: Religious education
Class: Year 1 Year: 2022 - 2023
To finish off our learning in our RE topic of Harvest, we recapped on the Jewish festival of Sukkot. We remembered that Sukkot is the Jewish festival of harvest where they remember how their ancestors were led from slavery in Egypt by Moses but then endured 40 years in the desert with very little food to eat and no permanent homes to live in. As part of the Jewish celebrations during the festival of Sukkot, many Jewish families build a Sukkah to remember the temporary shelters that the Jewish people built each night during their years wandering through the desert. We decided to build our own Sukkah in the classroom and recalled the Sukkah we visited last week during our trip to the Whitefield Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester. Our Sukkah was made with temporary walls, leaves for the roof so that you could still see the sky above and decorated with fruit. We then went inside the Sukkah with our friends to share a snack together, just as the Jewish people will do in the Sukkahs they build at their own homes. It was a lovely way to end our learning on harvest.
